To Catch a Reporter-Sponsored by DefCon

Over the weekend, I totally b.s.'d my way through a Saturday by vegging out over a marathon of Beauty and the Geek. (I'm always--ALWAYS--telling my daughter....go out with these guys...they've got the brains!!)

DefCon--the annual hackers convention--proved the Frog's point.

Apparently, Dateline producer Michelle Madigan wormed her way into the convention under false pretenses, trying to out an undercover federal agent at DefCon during a game of Spot the Fed.

DefCon security was given a heads up by those close to their hacker hearts that Mata Hari walked among them with a pinhole camera.

Ms. Madigan was lured into a conference room by DefCon to get a picture of the outed fed and wham!

A new chapter of Revenge of the Nerds was written.

I am so proud of these people I can barely stand it!

Michelle, how's it feel to be completely powerless with a camera stuck in your face?

For Chris Hansen, take note.

America is fighting back.

Watch the video and listen very carefully for these gems:

DID YOU CATCH A PREDATOR?

OR DID WE?

I THINK WE DID.

NO NO--IT'S CATCH AN IDENTITY THIEF.

THIS IS FOR ALL THOSE HELPLESS PREDATORS.

DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS?

YOU MUST FEEL LIKE LINDSAY LOHAN. I DON'T KNOW... LINDSAY LOHAN'S PRETTY SMART.

CAN I HAVE YOUR BADGE?

WAIT. WE JUST WANT TO ASK YOU SOME QUESTIONS.

EXCUSE ME, MISS. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ON 60 MINUTES?

TO CATCH A REPORTER!

SAME TIME NEXT YEAR!

GIVE OUR LOVE TO THE EDITORS!

Feel free to add your favorites to the list.

This was entertaining.

Okay, I have some questions. What's a hacker convention? Aren't hackers people who illegally break into others' computer systems to cause mayhem? Seriously, I'd like to know.

Whenever I pass that Dateline show while flipping channels, I get uncomfortable. It's weird. Because I think people like that should be locked up instead of harming our kids. However, there is something strange about setting them up and then putting it on tv. Like it's entertainment. Do the predators have to sign something before their faces are put on television before millions of people. It seems a violation of rights otherwise. So they must, right?

Still. This video made me laugh.

Your feelings about entrapment shows are right on the money. The "To Catch a Predator" series is under serious legal fire, with a hefty $105 million lawsuit as described here.

Racketeering and bribery are just a few of the charges NBC faces.

So many things are wrong with that show on so many levels, I could not begin to know why the faces of these men are shown but the laws of this land--that innocent until proven guilty clause--don't seem to apply to those accused of a sex offense..and in the case under suit, that guy never showed up anywhere. And now, he's dead.

The show is a constitutional train wreck.

Kate, this whole "protect the children" thing smacks of McCarthyism...you just wouldn't believe what is going on in this country. To start your research, just follow the money on how the sex offender registries are funded and what "constitutes" a sex crime .

Regarding the hackers...is hacking illegal? That's for you to decide...but meet a few of my new favorite people.

For anyone reading this comment, that ask yourself how can so many child molesters be out there, living among us...do your homework.

If an "offender" lives in your neighborhood, get a police report before making a judgment...you might be surprised should you learn that no physical contact have occurred...period. The chat rooms--by what I feel is an illegal use of the sting--results in easy ass arrests.

Stop watching "Predator" and those like Nancy Grace that feed that fear.

Education is the best hacker ever.

There is something delightfully subversive about the whole hacker thing.

I can't watch Predator. Too creepy. On all sides. And it makes me feel like one of those in the crowd during medieval beheadings. Even if some of the creeps deserve it, overall it's a bizarre atmosphere that I want no part of.

My exact thoughts.

The hackers ARE deliciously cool in a bad boy sort of intellectual way.
